In the night of 26 on 27 April 1943, a fleet of 557 RAF aircraft was sent to Duisburg to attack ground targets. They took off at about 00.20 hours. The center of gravity of the attack was planned between 02.15 hours and 03.00 hours at night where the ground targets were marked by Mosquito's.
This main group consisted of 10 Mosquito's, 79 Stirling bombers, 105 Halifax bombers, 35 Wellington bombers and 228 Lancaster bombers.
Almost 90% of the wave of attack succeeded in the mission, but despite that there was not much damage.
In the Operational Record Book (ORB) of the 207th RAF squadron articulated in Langar (GB), we obtain the following information:
26.04.43: Nice weather, windy. Eleven aircraft selected for operations. One previously returned - Sgt team. McIntosh. One team is missing: Sgt. I know. Nine aircraft attacked the primary target DUISBURG.
On the way back from Duisburg, Lancaster W4171 with red code 'EM-J' was attacked by a German hunter. About 03.09 OFW knew. Fritz Krüse of the 3/NGJ1 are Bf 110 night hunter to target and shoot Lancaster W4171.
The aircraft collapsed at the Volmolenbaan. All occupants lost their lives and are buried at the Schoonselhof.
