Facts

Spitfires from 54 and 616 Sqdn escort a bombing formation crossing towards Lille on the afternoon of 5 July. The Schlageter-Emils of the I.Gruppe show up. Both Oblt Priller and Lt Unzeitig take down two British aircraft above Dunkirk. Pilot Officer Kenward Knox (54 Sqdn) is hit and embarks on a long flight down, a flight that ends near the West Flemish village of Reningelst. Among the debris of the Spitfire Va with serial number R7222 is the lifeless body of the 23-year-old pilot.
He is buried in the British war cemetery of Reningelst, next to his fellow countrymen who died in the field hospital there during the First World War.
