At one minute after midnight of the first day of summer 1941, the Wellington Ic X3162 takes off from 57 Sqdn for a lonely 'Freshman' raid to Ostend. F / Lt Barber would accompany an inexperienced "green" crew. It is fatal for the six airmen. F / Lt Anthony Barber dies along with P / O McMaster, P / O McIver, Sgt Stone, Montague and Wilkings in the cold North Sea water. Only Barber's body is returned by the sea, the names of the five remaining crew members are chiseled in the memorial to the missing RAF airmen at Runnymede.
