Facts

Operation: Frankfurt. Take off 17.06 Leeming.
Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed 22.30 at Haute-Fays (Luxemburg, Belgium), 14 km NW of Paliseul, Belgium. Claimed by Maj Wilhelm Herget Stab I/NJG4 - WNW of Neufchateau: 5,000m at 21:30.
Warrant Officer Ellwin Clair Champion was only 20 years of age he was the skipper of the Halifax and had already made fifteen operational trips on difficult targets over germany and Italy, failing to return from his 16th raid which was over Frankfurt.
Six are buried in Hotton War Cemetery (First buried in the Juzaine Cemetery, Florennes, Belgium), while F/O Thomas USAAF has been interred in the United States Military Cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz.
